If you have ever had a sore inside your mouth, it can be uncomfortable and irritating, but you might also be concerned about whether you need to call your doctor or dentist. Canker sores are one type of mouth sore, so what are canker sores, and how do you treat them?

What Are Canker Sores?

Canker sores are ulcers that can be found inside the lining of your mouth; they often start as a yellow or white sore with red on the outside border. Although canker sores aren’t very big, they can be painful and make it difficult to eat and talk. Unlike cold sores, which are contagious, canker sores are not viral or infectious.

Canker sores can form in the following areas of your mouth:

  • On your tongue
  • Under your tongue
  • On your gums
  • On the roof of your mouth
  • Inside your lip

Canker sores fall into two different categories; there are simple canker sores and complex canker sores. The first type, simple canker sores, can occur several times a year but only last for about a week. The second type, complex canker sores, are less common but can reoccur several times a year.

What Causes Canker Sores?

Although the cause of canker sores isn’t certain, the following factors can trigger them:

  • Acidic foods such as oranges and lemons
  • Stress
  • Mouth injuries
  • Braces or dentures
  • Certain medications

How Do You Treat Canker Sores? Should I Call the Doctor?

Various over-the-counter treatments are available to treat canker sores and their symptoms. Some of these include mouth rinses that contain hydrogen peroxide, hydrocortisone ointments, and topical anesthetics that contain benzocaine.

However, if your canker sores begin to spread, last for more than two weeks, or if you start to run a fever, it is best to call your doctor to ask for advice. If symptoms persist, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
