Gum disease is a common issue that, left untreated, can lead to a variety of serious health problems. Fortunately, gum disease is also fairly easily preventable.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum (or periodontal) disease is a bacterial infection that afflicts the gums and bones that support the teeth. There are two stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis, which is the initial stage of gum disease, typically results in mild inflammation of the gums. However, left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, which has far more severe consequences, including bleeding, swelling, tooth loss, and bone deterioration.

Common Causes of Gum Disease

Gum disease can be caused by a number of factors. Most common among these is plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the surfaces of teeth and gums. if untreated, plaque hardens into tartar, which cannot be combated with brushing and flossing and causes more severe inflammation of the gums. Additionally, smokers, as well as patients who suffer from diabetes, face increased risks of developing gum disease.

Tips for Preventing Gum Disease

To reduce your risk of developing gum disease, you can take a number of easy, preventative steps:

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene – Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing regularly with antiseptic mouthwash are easy and effective ways to remove the plaque and bacteria that cause gum disease.
  • Avoid Tobacco Products – Smoking and smokeless tobacco use increase the risk of gum disease and make it more difficult to treat.
  • Eat a Healthy Diet – A healthy diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help to reduce the risk of plaque buildup.
  • Regular Dental Visits – Regular routine checkups and cleanings allow your dentist to identify risk factors of gum disease and treat any issues before they become serious problems.
