Some kids dread going to the dentist. They may complain about stomach pain, headaches, or other illnesses to try and get you to cancel their appointment. Once at the dentist, they may get even more upset. Here are three ways to help your child feel more comfortable about going to the dentist:
1. Make Dental Visits Routine
If your child only sees a dentist when there’s something wrong with their teeth, they can develop a more negative association with the dentist. Kids should visit the dentist around age 1, even if they don’t have any teeth yet, then come back every 6 months for preventive cleanings and checkups. These early visits are low-key. We get to know your child, talk about the tools we use, take a quick look in their mouth, and answer any questions you have about their oral care at home.
2. Show Them Books, Cartoons & Videos About the Dentist
There are many educational books and children’s shows describing what happens at the dentist in positive, kid-friendly language. When your child is familiar with stories about the dentist, visiting may not feel as overwhelming or frightening. You can also use books and cartoons to help your child develop good brushing and flossing habits. There are a variety of brushing timers and apps with cartoons, music, and badges.
3. Help Them Know What to Expect at the Dentist
Talk your child through what will happen at the dentist. Be as positive as you can but also be honest. It’s OK to let them know that certain parts of a dental visit can feel a bit uncomfortable, like holding their mouth open and having tools put in their mouth. As appropriate for their age, listen to and acknowledge their feelings. Try encouraging your child to draw pictures or write about their feelings to help them process their emotions.
